About this project

  2. About this project

This is an independent reference site about food hygiene results in the United Kingdom. It is run privately and funded privately. Independent site. Not affiliated with the Food Standards Agency or any local authority.

The reason it exists is narrow. The Food Standards Agency publishes a national file every day, and that file answers questions it was not shaped to answer: how old the ratings in an area are, how the mix of results compares with the same kinds of business elsewhere, and how many premises are still waiting for a result. Those answers need arithmetic, a denominator and an honest interval, so we do that work and show it.

We publish no editor photograph, no founder profile and no opinion columns. There is nothing to sign up to. Where a figure is uncertain, the page shows the interval. Where a figure cannot be built from the accepted file, the page says so instead of estimating.

The rules we hold ourselves to are on the methodology page: one accepted file per release, a denominator beside every share, no comparison between the two schemes, and no number that we cannot reproduce from the file we kept.
